Top Tuesday: Best bargain bin Wii games

The problem with any new console launch is that it often comes with a dearth of games. I still remember working at CNA when the Playstation 2 launched with a grand total of four games available, with only Tekken Tag Tournament being a worthwhile purchase. Plus when you add the fact that you had to spend R4000 or more for the console itself, chances are you're going to go home with not much to do with your new console. And now that the Wii U is almost upon us, this is a problem a lot of people are going to have to deal with.

Thankfully, since backwards compatibility has become a mostly standard feature with consoles, it's possible to grab some quality games for the Wii on the cheap. With that in mind, here's a list of some top quality Wii games you'll likely find in the bargain bins that you can use with your new Wii U .

Metroid Prime Trilogy

As the name suggests, Metroid Prime Trilogy, is a compilation of the entire Metroid Prime series, consisting of the Wii developed Metroid Prime: Corruption and adding and updating the two GameCube hits - Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime: Echoes -  for use on the Wii. Though rarely named as such, the Metroid Prime games are some of the finest first-person shooters (FPS) available, though that probably has a lot to do with their slower paced and exploratory nature. Their conversion to the Wii represents the games in their best forms and should be played by everyone.

Trauma Center: Second Opinion

Trauma Center: Second Opinion is actually a remake of Trauma Center: Under the Knife which was a Nintendo DS game, but with its visuals and interface overhauled to take advantage of the Wii's motion-sensing controls. Despite originating from a less powerful system, Trauma Center was one of the first games to really take full advantage of the Wii's motion features, the consoles Wiimotes substituting for surgical equipment. It is still in my opinion one of the few Wii games where motion controls were essential to the experience.

Unlike nearly everything else in the Wii's library, MadWorld is a violent, violent game, even given it's unique black and white art style. MadWorld is a beat-'em-up staring the chainsaw armed Jack as he participates in a murderous reality TV show called DeathWatch. In keeping with the games reality TV show theme, players were challenged to defeat that enemies creatively. Check the video to see what I mean.

Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

Though most people would pick Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword over Twilight Princess, I personally enjoyed the older game more. Odd as it seems, Twilight Princess' lower investment in the system's motion controls make the overall control less frustrating. Not mention, Twilight Princess' helper character, Midna, is way more charming than Skyward Sword's annoying Fi.

Super Mario Galaxy 2

Every console develops a few signature games over time, games that immediately spring to mind when you think about that console and for the Wii, Super Mario Galaxy 2 is certainly one of those games. Super Mario Galaxy 2 is also arguably the greatest 3D platformer ever made, with it's bright, vibrant graphics, superlative control and innovative take on the genre, bending space in wonderful and creative ways.
