Last weekend, at the MWEB GameZone Mpumalanga FIFA ’13 PlayStation 3 championships, Taneshka Combrink, a spirited young student from the Tshwane University of Technology scored a well-deserved place in the South African national team trials for the International eSports Federation (IeSF) Wold Championships to be held in South Korea later this year.

The event was sponsored by Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) and Is part of a series being held around the country that aim to identify suitable candidates for a national FIFA team. Colin Webster, MSSA president, said in a statement:

The MSSA actively pursues a policy of promoting both male and females in gaming. As a result of such policy, South Africa's female competitors were able to be placed both 2nd and fourth in the 2012 IeSF World Championships. The MSSA wants to do better in 2013.

Taneshka stated that she expected her fiercest completion to come from fellow gamer Razeena Salooja, the wife of ex-Protea play Abubakar Ebrahiem who represented South Africa is the 2011 IeSF World Championships. As he had been acting as Razeena’s FIFA coach, everybody at the event knew that she would be a very hard player to beat.

By the time Taneshka and Razeena faced off in the third round of the competition, it was clear that one of these two women would be the winner of the title of Best Female FIFA ’13 Player in Mpumalanga. The atmosphere crackled with excitement as the crowd watched Taneshka score an early goal. She managed to maintain a strong defence and hold off all of Razeena’s attacks for the rest of the match, and thus secured a win and automatic entry into the National FIFA Team Trials.
