Niantic announces Pokémon GO PvP mode to release before the end of the year

Pokémon GO released just over two years ago in July 2016, and since then Niantic has added several game-changing features that significantly improved the game for its millions of players. Raiding, the addition of legendary Pokémon, a dynamic weather system, single-player quests, trading, gifting, and "friends." However, one of the biggest fan-requested features; player-vs-player battles, have been hinted at, and until today we've not had an official announcement or release window.

In a recent interview with, Niantic's Head of Product Marketing for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, Anne Beuttenmüller, confirmed that player-vs-player is the next big change to hit Pokémon GO, and it will happen before the end of 2018. The interview is in Polish, I used Google Translate for all quotes stated below.

When asked which new products will be added to Pokémon GO, Beuttenmüller replied:

"Now we are working on the PvP mode, which will soon appear. In addition, we're still working on improving the feature that has just made its debut - it's all about friends, such as the ability to exchange Pokemon in the game. We've just introduced an improvement so you can add a note to your friend. The point is that you can have many people on your friends list and do not remember who is who. So you can add a comment to that person. You can also segregate your friends list.

We are constantly improving the elements that we have available in the game and the next thing that we want to add at the end of this year is the PvP mode."

In September last year, The Pokémon Company's Chief Executive Officer, Tsunekazu Ishihara, stated that they have "only accomplished 10 percent of what Pokémon and Niantic are trying to do." Since then, they've certainly added a stack of new features, and ending this year with player-vs-player battles make you wonder if there are any big features left to add to the game.

Beuttenmüller did also confirm that they will be adding new Pokémon to the game, but it isn't something she could elaborate on at this stage.

What say the Pokémon GO community - what does life hold after PvP? Niantic and The Pokémon Company must surely still have a few aces up their sleeve otherwise they wouldn't have rolled out so many major features in such a short time.

In other Pokémon GO news, don't forget to participate in the special trading event that ends on August 19. All trades, including Special Trades, will cost 25% less Stardust to complete. You can also earn more Candy during every trade (up to six Candies in total), and you’ll receive triple XP when you encounter a Pokémon and add it to your Pokédex.
