Microsoft unveils the Xbox Adaptive Controller for people with disabilities

Everyone should be able to experience the joy of gaming but we all know some people can’t properly experience it due to disabilities. It’s a terrible thing as gaming has brought so much joy to all our lives. That’s where the Xbox Adaptive Controller comes in, as Microsoft has announced the accessible and highly customizable controller that was designed primarily to meet the needs of gamers with limited mobility.

Hopefully, this controller will help gamers with both temporary and permanent disabilities play the games they want without issue and it is simply a wonderful idea for Microsoft to implement. Microsoft designed the Xbox Adaptive Controller through feedback from the accessibility community. According to Microsoft, a gamer will be able to game with one hand and one foot, or one hand and their shoulder, or even one foot and their chin.

There are a vast number of possibilities for gamers with all kinds of disabilities due to the customization options of the controller. As someone with a special young person with Cerebral Palsy in my life, combined with the fact that I work in gaming, this brought tears to my eyes this morning, as this controller could help that person share the joy of gaming with me one day. That’s why the Xbox Adaptive Controller is now my most anticipated piece of gaming hardware, by far.

The description of the Xbox Adaptive Controller reads:

Designed primarily to meet the needs of gamers with limited mobility, the Xbox Adaptive Controller is a unified hub for devices that help make gaming more accessible. Connect external devices such as switches, buttons, mounts, and joysticks to create a custom controller experience that is uniquely yours. Button, thumbstick, and trigger inputs are controlled with assistive devices (sold separately) connected through 3.5mm jacks and USB ports.

Find out how it works in the video below:

At the time of writing there is no solid release date except for the announcement that it will release this year, so you won’t have to wait years or for next-gen for the controller at all. There is also no pricing for the Xbox Adaptive Controller just yet, but we will keep you in the loop when we know more.

Watch the announcement video for the Xbox Adaptive Controller below and then tell us what you think about the device in the comment section.
