GTA V is closing in on 100 million copies sold and continues to rake in the green

Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto V is, to this day, one of the most exhilarating and brilliant games to play. It’s awesome story and gameplay is still, in my opinion, a standard for other developers to live up to and with all the free GTA Online content updates, the game simply won’t stop growing.

During the publisher Take-Two’s financial results for the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2018 (which ended 31 March 2018) the game was again praised with delivering “better-than-expected results from Grand Theft Auto Online”. Basically, Rockstar’s megahit is continuing to print money via its online component and game sales.

Since the game’s release in 2013 up to 31 March 2018, the game has broken the 95 million copies sold mark. Keep in mind that this is for Xbox 360, PS3, Xbox One, PS4 and PC all put together. That means it is less than 5 million copies sold away from the mammoth 100 million milestone. Let’s face it, GTA V has already seen historic success, but the nice round 100,000,000 number would be quite awesome to see and well deserved.

What makes this feat even more impressive for me is that the game still sells for quite a lot of money and while it does feature in sales, I have never seen it below the R400 mark on current-gen consoles.

In the financial results, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick states that:

During the fourth quarter, Take-Two delivered net bookings growth driven by increased recurrent consumer spending — including better-than-expected results from Grand Theft Auto Online. GTA: Online and NBA 2K generated record results, exceeding our original expectations, and we benefited from strong ongoing sales of Grand Theft Auto V and other catalog titles.

Take-Two even released a GTA V Premium Online Edition last month (it is selling for just under R900 locally at the moment), which includes Criminal Enterprise Starter Pack, which includes “with the most exciting and popular content plus $1,000,000 bonus cash to spend in GTA Online - all content valued at over GTA$10,000,000 if purchased Separately.”

Since it is now more than a month and a half after the game already broke the 95 million copies sold mark and the Premium Online Edition just released last month, the game could already be very close to that 100 million mark and I do expect an announcement of the milestone being hit before the end of this year.
