S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 emerges from development hell.

Yesterday, out of the blue, Sergiy Grygorovych, head of GSC Game World, the company behind the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series, announced S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2. Grygorovych made the announcement via his Facebook page with a link leading to the official website for the game.

"Today 15.05.2018 I officially declare: "GSC GAME WORLD DEVELOPS S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2" www.stalker2.com. Fans will have to around three years to get to play S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2. The website indicates nothing expect the title and release window.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl was an incredibly immersive game with a unique style that I loved. I don't quite know how to articulate that specific magic; the game had many familiar gameplay mechanics, yet at the same time very unfamiliar. It was drenched in atmosphere, it was familiar yet foreign, and there was a solitude to the experience that I found intoxicating. I loved the different game mechanics and how it all blended together to deliver that unique experience.

I am not a Completionist, and when I play video games I usually steer clear of side quests and focus on the main story. However, I've played a handful of games in my 30 odd years of gaming where that desire to complete every single quest and find as many secret items as possible was an irresistible pull.  Fallout 2, South Park: The Fractured But Whole (Switch version), the Mass Effect series, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl were such games.

That being said, I didn't enjoy S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky (2008) or Call of Pripyat (2009) as much as Shadow of Chernobyl, some of that magic was absent.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2. was initially announced in August 2010 and scheduled to release in 2012 but got cancelled in April 2012. In December 2011, Grygorovych announced that GSC GAME WORLD was closing its doors - which is now suddenly open again. In March 2012, many of the original team left GSC GAME WORLD to form their own studio, Vostok Games with their first title, Survarium, a free-to-play open world MMOFPS. I would love to play S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 but I do have some misgivings about the team behind the development. I hope we'll hear more details soon about what Grygorovych has planned for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2.

For those new to the series, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. takes place after the Chernobyl disaster, with the location playing off near the accident site. Because of the nuclear radiation, you encounter different mutations and mutants, and as a result of the environment also poses unique challenges. There are different factions in the game, resources are scares, and you have to survive this hostile world. The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series is a PC exclusive, but hopefully, the next game will release on all major platforms.

Are you a fan of the series, if so, what would you like to see in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2.? I would like to see it change to an open world setting with more role-playing elements and a party feature.
