SEGA Mega Drive Mini Console Announced

SEGA Mega Drive Mini.jpg

SEGA is returning to the console business it seems. Well, at least by bringing back their classic console that we all loved and adored. SEGA announced during the company's SEGA FES event in Japan that they will be releasing a mini version of the awesome SEGA Mega Drive later this year. While details are scarce at the moment this is what we know right now.

The console will be the palm-sized version of the SEGA Mega Drive (also known as the SEGA Genesis) console. This move is most likely to test the waters and see how gamers welcome the return of the classic console. Nintendo's NES Classic Mini and SNES Classic Mini were a huge hit and SEGA has some fantastic games on the Genesis system that would attract quite a lot of attention.

Speaking of games, SEGA did not announce any built-in titles for this mini console at all. The company might still be nailing down license rights for it at the moment but we are sure it will include some all-time favourites such as Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Gunstar Heroes, Comix Zone, Sonic and Knuckles and of course, Alex the Kidd. The console will be released in conjunction with its 30th anniversary which is this year.

SEGA did not reveal a release date yet for the console or if it will be arriving in other countries other than Japan, but the Nintendo Mini Consoles did so well so we can expect them to release it worldwide if they cared about sales. If you are not interested in the console itself then you can perhaps pick up the SEGA Genesis Collection which was recently announced for Switch, PS4, and Xbox One. This will include various classics remastered for modern hardware.
