The PlayStation 5 is real but it might only release in 2020 according to a new report

Before we get into the details of the latest report about the PlayStation 5 it is important to remember that there is no official word from Sony and that everything but an official announcement should be taken with a large helping of salt. With that out of the way, there is a report by Kotaku that suggest the PS5 might only release in 2020 according to their sources, with 2019 being the earliest.

Last month we reported on a rumour that Developer Kits for the PS5 have already been shipped to some developers and early this month, another rumour emerged with some specs and details about Sony’s next-gen console and that it could be revealed this year and release in Spring 2019.

The dev kit rumours could still be real, as a source told Kotaku that early dev kits could possibly take the form of a PC with a test version of the GPU and CPU that will be used in the PS5 inside said PC, so it might not actually look like a PlayStation at all. With that in mind, the report also notes that Sony has, in the past, asked developers to keep these kits in a locked room and that access was restricted to only a small number of people.

Even though two sources said they have knowledge of Sony’s plans for the next-gen console, the earliest release would be 2019 with no time period specified, which goes against rumours that the console might even release at the end of this year. One source reportedly explained that:

"On a multi-year project, a lot can happen to shift schedules both forward and backward. At some point, Sony's probably looked at every possible date. It's all about what they think is the best sweet spot in terms of hardware."

The longer the PS5 takes the more powerful it might possibly be and I, for one, don’t think Sony is in any rush since the PS4 and PS4 Pro are still doing so well and there is a tonne of awesome exclusives still to come. Be that as it may, I am still hoping that we hear something about the new console at E3 2018, but that seems more unlikely now if this report is to be believed.

When do you think the PS5 will release and what do you want to see from Sony’s next-gen console? Let us know in the comment section below.
