Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden announced – An intriguing tactical adventure game

Out of nowhere, Funcom has my attention, as they have announced one of the most intriguing looking games I have seen in quite a while. Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden is quite a mouthful. The game is being published by Funcom and developed by Bearded Ladies, a Swedish development studio that includes former Hitman designers as well as Payday designer Ulf Andersson.

The game is described as a tactical adventure game and is said to feature a deep storyline set on a post-human Earth. Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden will combine strategy and turn-based tactical combat much like XCOM and will also include stealth gameplay and real-time exploration.

Of course the world ends, it was just a question of time. Extreme climate change, global economic crisis, a lethal pandemic, and increasing tension between old and new superpowers. For the first time since 1945 nuclear weapons were used in armed conflict. Mushroom clouds rose from east to west before the dust settled. The humans are gone. The Mutants are here.

The premise sounds promising and the XCOM-like gameplay should get some fans of turn-based tactical combat drool, but for me, the most interesting part is the characters displayed in the trailer, which you can view at the bottom of this article. Funcom explains:

Players must take control of a team of unlikely heroes, such as Dux (a crossbow-wielding, walking, talking duck) and Bormin (a boar with serious anger issues), and help them navigate a post-human Earth with its abandoned cities, crumbling highways, and mutated monsters on every corner. The ultimate goal: save yourselves by finding the legendary Eden.

Who doesn’t want to play with a walking, talking duck or a boar, who looks kind of like a character in Beyond Good & Evil? The game does look beautiful as well and the world might be very interesting to explore. Check out the first four screenshots below and then the trailer at the bottom of this article.

Although there is no specific release date, Funcom did announce that the game will release on PC, PS4 and Xbox One this year, so if you are as intrigued about the game as I am, then you will be happy to know you won’t have to wait for years. I haven’t been this intrigued by a Funcom game in quite some time.
