Phantom 8 Studio released a story trailer for Past Cure that gives us some insight into the troubled soul of the protagonist, Ian. PC gamers will be happy to know that a demo for the game will be available to download next week. Past Cure releases on February 23 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

The developer describes Past Cure as a "dark psychological thriller," and inspired by Inception, Silent Hill, and the Metal Gear series. To immerse the player into this twisted world, Phantom 8 continually switches you between two realities; that of Ian's dreams, and the real world - and both are filled with trauma, action, and suspense. Ian suffers from an "unstable mental condition" as well as acute memory loss. All we know about his past is that he was once a soldier who went MIA. It is now three years after he was reported missing, and with the help of his brother Marcus, he tries to put the pieces of his shattered memory back together.

Ian discovers that he has superhuman abilities; he can slow time and trigger out of body experiences that allow him to navigate unseen through the world without moving. As always, there's a cost attached to these abilities; Ian is tormented by vivid hallucinations and violent nightmares. If Ian overuses his powers, he also gets a crippling migraine. To balance his unstable mind, Ian becomes dependent on a Black Market drug. One night, the cycle of his nightmarish dreams are interrupted by a woman that Ian kind of recognizes. We don't know what role she will play in the saga, only that she is somehow important to the plot.

Ian's only lead out of the nightmare that has become his life is to follow the drugs to uncover the organization behind it.

Past Cure Core Features

  • Past Cure is a cinematic, story-driven experience where the player follows the struggle of a broken man searching for the missing pieces of his mind. With intense cutscenes and intriguing story items throughout the levels, the players can unravel a story that will keep them guessing until the end.
  • Action vs. Stealth: Be bold and engage your enemies with time-bending gun battles and brutal jaw crunching combos. Or pick the stealthy approach where evasion tactics and slick stealth takedowns allow you to outsmart your enemies in silence. Choose the right approach to each situation as there are pros and cons to each playing style.
  • Mind-bending abilities: Unleash the unlocked power of Ian’s mind against those who unlocked it. To truly master the Past Cure experience, players must utilise time manipulation and astral projection to gain an edge on opponents and overcome obstacles.
  • Dreams vs reality: Ian’s mind is torn between the gritty real world and the nightmarish horror of his dreams. Past Cure contrasts between the cold, brutal combat orientated levels of the real world, to the more puzzle solving and survival gameplay in the abstract dream worlds.

PC gamers who want to try out the game before they purchase it can download the free demo next week via Steam.
