Someone bought a cosmetic CS: GO item for over R700,000

AWP sale.jpg

I’ve splurged on some cosmetic items in games I enjoy playing in the past. A Dota 2 item for R150, some loot boxes in Overwatch and things like that. There are, of course, a lot of people who purchase cosmetic items and you don’t have to look further than our article about the most expensive items on the Steam Community Marketplace to see what I am talking about.

However, that is nothing compared to the biggest sale in of a cosmetic item in gaming history. Someone actually bought a Souvenir AWP Dragon Lore (CS: GO gun skin) for a whopping $61,052.63 according to OPSkins. That’s R740,971.35 at the current Dollar to Rand exchange rate.

Normal Dragon Lore’s are already quite expensive, selling from about $1000 to $3000 depending on quality. Souvenir Dragon Lore’s can go over $10,000, but this Dragon Lore is pretty special, hence the massive amount of money it was sold for.

In case you didn’t know, Cloud9 became the first North American team to win a CS: GO Major last month when they lifted the ELEAGUE Major: Boston trophy. This specific Souvenir AWP Dragon Lore has stickers from the winning team, Cloud9, as well as the Boston Major’s MVP, Tyler "Skadoodle" Latham. Further, the skin also has a Factory New wear value of 5.92317 percent, according to dotesports.com. Check out the listing on OPSkins here.

But who was the seller of this magnificent beast of a skin? Well, he goes by the nickname “Drone” and told Polygon that he bought the skin for roughly $35,000. Drone is a collector of high-value CS: GO items and spoke to Polygon about the sale, stating that:

We agreed on that price since that was the only price I was willing to accept. Otherwise I would have kept it.

He then continued by talking about his hobby of collecting these cosmetic items:

I didn’t originally get into this game solely for profit, I just got very lucky a couple of times, and money is more valuable to different people. I’m very lucky in my financial state to where I can afford to buy these skins and it does not affect me.” - Source

Money means different things to different people, yes, but it is hard to wrap my mind around such a big cosmetic item sale. I mean, come on, you can purchase a brand-new Toyota Hilux Double Cab and take a trip overseas with that money! To each their own I guess.

What do you think about all of this? Let us know in the comment section below and tell us about your experiences with purchasing cosmetic items.
