Bungie announces changes to Destiny 2's XP as player uncovers scaling issues

A Destiny 2 player and Redditor by the name of EnergiserX uncovered something very interesting relating to how the game scales XP gains. Bungie has no admitted that the scaling system is flawed and that effective immediately there will be radical changes on how Guardians will gain XP going forward.

EnergiserX explained in detail in a post on Reddit that:

  • If you earn XP slow, the ingame display is correct.
  • If you play normally, the game drops some XP (~ 50%).
  • If you power-grind XP the game will drop most of your XP (~ 90%).

What he found was that when you play for long periods (after you've hit level 20), like you would in the Leviathan Raid, or in Crucible Competitive, then you would gain a lot of XP, but when you power ground by participating in Public Events, then the reverse would happen. A lot of Guardians do use public events to stock up on XP points, and this explains why you've been struggling to rack up points.

Bungie admitted to the inherent flaws in Destiny 2's XP gains system, and is rolling out changes across all activities in the game.

We’ve seen community discussion around XP gain in Destiny. After reviewing our data, we agree that the system is not performing the way we’d like it to, explains Bungie. "Currently, XP will scale up when playing longer or fixed duration activities like Crucible competitive multiplayer matches and the Leviathan Raid, and XP will scale down when playing activities that can be quickly, repeatedly chained, like grinding Public Events.

We are not happy with the results, and we’ve heard the same from the community. Effective immediately, we are deactivating this system.

As a result, players will see XP earn rates change for all activities across the board, but with all values being displayed consistently in the user interface. Over the course of the next week, we will be watching and reviewing XP game data to ensure that these changes meet our expectations, as well as yours. Any additional updates to this system will be communicated to you via our official channels."

In other Destiny 2 news, Xur is visiting Io this week and he is selling a Fusion Rifle (Merciless), Lucky pants armour for Hunters, a Titan helmet (Mask of the Quiet One), and a Dawnblade Warlock Chest piece (Starfire Protocol). The first Iron Banner event is in full swing, and if you're grinding for gear then it's a great way to level up.

Lastly, in case you missed it, check out our "What Destiny 2 Curse of Osiris needs to save the series," video below. I couldn't agree more with every point listed. If you're still looking to join a Destiny 2 clan, then I recommend MWEB GameZone's Mystic Marshmallows for console, and The Digital Plague for PC players.
