October 2017 Video Game Releases: The Best Month of 2017

October 2017 games.jpg

To say that October is a big month in gaming is a big understatement. It's all a bit overwhelming, especially when it comes to picking which games to play, and which to let stand over for another month.

For me, the biggest release of the month, and one of my most anticipated games of the year, is Destiny 2 on PC. If you've not been waiting to don the Guardian suit, then there's racing, horror, action, role-playing, Indies, interactive stories, a visit to Egypt, racing in 4K, you name it, October has it. When it comes to the Switch, there's a few important titles coming to the handheld in October; find that list at the bottom of the article.

To help you decide what to play this October, we've compiled a video of our top 10 releases. We would love to know what yo9u'll be playing this coming month, so drop us a comment in the section below.

Forza Motorsport 7

Release date: 03/10 WW

Platforms: Play Anywhere Exclusive

Genre: Racing

Modes: Single-player & multiplayer

Age Restriction: E for Everyone

Description: Forza Motorsport 7 will be the first Xbox One X game to run at native 4K resolution. To download the 4K assets, Forza 7 will have a massive 50GB update on day one, with the main game sporting a full 45GB download. It’s heavy, but probably worth it if you have the horse power to play it at 4K. When it comes to the game itself, players will be treated to “700 cars at launch, 32 of the world’s greatest tracks (Forza’s largest lineup ever), a massive career in the Forza Driver’s Cup, and of course a huge list of ever-changing multiplayer and competitive modes that will keep players busy no matter their skill level or driving preferences.”

The narrative continues with the story of ranger Talion and the spirit of Celebrimbor who inhabits his body. Together they embark on a mission to forge a new ring of power to use against Sauron and his army. The open world setting is driven by main objects which focuses on strategic missions against Sauron’s army. There are also a wide variety of side quests. Unlike its processor, there are more RPG elements in the game, as well as a full day/night cycle which supposedly has an influence on enemy behavior.

News about his supposedly dead daughter, Lily, wakes him from his stupor, and so the nightmare begins anew. Lily’s brain is used by the evil overlords at Mobius who hooked her up to their STEM device which creates alternate realities within her mind. This world is called “Union” and as can be expected, is very unstable. Sebastian races against time to prevent a complete shutdown of Lily’s mind, but the way is fraught with enemies who now occupies her mind in Union. Gran Turismo Sport

Release dates: 17/10 NA, 18/10 EU, AUS & SA, 19/10 JP

Platform: PS4 exclusive

Genre: Racing

Modes: Single-player & multiplayer

Age Restriction: E for Everyone

Rated for: Use of Alcohol and Tobacco. Online not rated

Description: There will be three distinct game modes in Gran Turismo Sport; Campaign, Sports Mode &  Arcade Mode, and two FIA online championships running simultaneously; Nations Cup (players represent their home country) & Manufacturers Cup (players will be driving on behalf of their favorite car manufacturer.) We got some hands-on time with the game, and our initial impressions found that it had the makings of a stunning racer. “Overall GT Sport manages to bring back the series and what we loved about it since the original while improving on every slow aspect in the menu from past games and making the racing experience even better.” We had no issues connecting to online matches from South Africa. Racing felt authentic as could be and demands a level of skill from players. It is a definite must play for petrolheads.

Destiny 2 PC

Release date: 24/10 WW

Genre: First-person, action role-playing

Modes: Single-player & multiplayer

Age Restriction: T for Teen

Rated for: Blood, Language, Violence. Online not rated

Description: The few hours I experienced of Destiny 2 during the PC beta convinced me that it will be the next game I’ll invest every free minute in. Everything about the PC version impressed me; from the breathtaking graphics, to the team play in the Strike mission, and to figuring out how I wanted to set up my Guardian. Destiny 2 has all the promise of everything we want in an online action-RPG. That being said, our console review did raise some serious questions regarding the end game story, so we’ll have to see if Bungie follows up with proper post launch content.

Assassin's Creed Origins

Release date: 27/10 WW

Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One

Genre: Third-person, action-adventure

Mode: Single-player

Age Restriction: M 17+

Rated for: Blood and Gore, Drug Reference, Intense Violence, Nudity, Sexual Content, Strong Language, Use of Alcohol

Description: From our hands-on time with the game. Assassin's Creed: Origin is a new step for the series that feels like a welcomed refresh, but at the same time, still packs all that Assassin's Creed goodness into one package that we loved from the series in the past. All the improvements across all releases are somewhere in the game, and it felt like Ubisoft drew inspiration from all directions when they created the game. Parkour, combat, stealth, the open world, and of course the brand new RPG loot system makes Origins feel like the most ambitious, and yet fresh adventure in years.

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus

Release date: 27/10 WW

Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One

Genre: First-person shooter

Mode: Single-player

Age Restriction: M 17+

Rated for: Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Partial Nudity, Sexual Content, Strong Language, Use of Drugs

Description: Players once again put on the Nazi-stomping boots of William “B.J.” Blazkowicz, aka Terror-Billy” in an action-packed single-player campaign with one singular goal in mind: “Rally the resistance and end the Nazi’s tyrannical reign in America.” However, our hero awakes severely injured, in a wheelchair, and things are not looking good in Nazi-occupied America. Something about the game you probably don’t know, somewhere in Africa is the only place free from Nazi dominance in Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus.

The different cities each has a unique look and feel, for example, Nazi controlled New Orleans is a ghetto, while Roswell, New Mexico is in stark contrast to New Orleans as it's a functional city. In The New Colossus we enter the 14th year of Nazi dominance, so America has undergone a Nazi transformation - from language to historic icons, and so on. The Nazi's, however, have been "Americanized" as they're all for milkshakes and burgers now. America's cultural identity is in a mess, but BJ is back to make everything American again!
