Niantic details Pokémon GO's underwhelming in-game anniversary celebration

Pokemon GO 1 year.jpg

I am not a Pokémon GO fan, but Niantic's first in-game birthday celebration seems very underwhelming, but maybe the players will disagree. Earlier today, we talked about how the game passed $1.2 billion in revenue earned after its first year, with 752 million downloads! That is a lot of money in Niantic's coffers, and let's not forget that it's from in-game purchases, as the game is free. I would've thought Niantic would at least give something away to its millions of loyal Trainers.

Instead, this is what millions of Pokémon GO players get for the games first anniversary celebration.

"To celebrate Pokémon GO’s one-year anniversary, Niantic and The Pokémon Company today revealed that from now through July 13, Trainers will be able to find and catch Pikachu wearing Ash’s famous hat from the Pokémon animated series," announced Niantic in a press release. "A new featured store item, the Anniversary Box, which contains Incubators, Max Revives, Ultra Balls and a Raid Pass, will also be available for a limited time through the in-game shop at a discounted price."

Hey, at least that hat is very cool and you get ... a discount...

I would love to hear from the Pokémon GO fans. Are you happy about the above mentioned "gifts." Did you expect an event and or some freebies? Perhaps Niantic thought that the Raid update and the upcoming Pokémon GO Fest are enough to keep Trainers entertained. If so, then I think they're seriously neglecting the millions of players who can't attend the event in Canada.

How about making an effort to get the millions who left the game back by enticing them with something worthy of a first birthday? At least give something away for free! Isn't that what birthdays are all about?

Niantic indicated in the press release that there would be more details on the official Pokémon GO blog about the "first one-year anniversary activities." Sadly, the last entry on the blog was on June 29 about the Raid battles. Do better, or Pokémon GO could become Pokémon NO.

What say the fans?
