Garfield GO is a real mobile game released this week

Garfield GO is a hilarious, obvious clone of Pokémon GO that released this Tuesday, because Garfield hates Mondays, on Android and iOS devices (not officially available in SA yet). It is an augmented reality mobile title about everyone’s favourite lasagna-eating, grumpy cat.

The game requires players walking around in the real work collecting things for Garfield, such as his comic collection and treasures. Further, players will need to feed Garfield and find food out in the world by playing mini-games on the app. Garfield GO is developed by Freeze Tag and looks like it might be my next mobile gaming obsession.

The game’s official description reads:

“Garfield GO is a brand new augmented reality treasure hunting game, featuring everyone’s favorite lasagna-loving cat! Odie has scattered Garfield’s comic collection and buried treasures around the world -- Help Garfield get them all back, while scavenging for hidden chests along the way! Don’t think it’ll be that easy to get Garfield off the couch. You’ll need to bake his favorites foods to entice him to help you find these treasures.”

Garfield GO features:

  • Feed Garfield his favourite foods to help locate different chests
  • Build and Complete your comic collection
  • Collect rare comics, including exclusive Jim Davis’ Favourites
  • Find and wear special hats to customise Garfield’s appearance -
  • Trade and redeem trinkets collected for rewards
  • Earn special badges by completing achievements
  • Visit mini-game locations to earn more food and coins

The game’s website also claims that you can win real prizes, such as Amazon, Starbucks, Domino’s Pizza Gift Cards. However, that is obviously not available in South Africa, and neither is the game, yet.   At the time of writing, the game isn’t officially available in South Africa. However, if you have something like a US mobile account for PlayStore or iOS, you can still download and play it. Further, you can fill in a location request on the game’s official website.

Mobile Requirements:

  • iOS 8.0 or higher and runs on the following devices: iPhone, iPad, and iPod touchRequires
  • Android 4.0.3 or higher and runs on most Android devices
