Pokémon GO: Why Niantic might introduce Legendary Pokémon soon

Over the weekend, developer Niantic Labs teased new cooperative experiences for Pokémon GO. But isn’t Pokémon GO already cooperative, in the sense that you can group up and throw down lures for others to enjoy, tell your fellow trainers about specific nest spots or drive to the beach together to try and catch a golden Magikarp?

That got me thinking, what type of co-op feature could Niantic possibly be teasing? Maybe it is an expanded gym system that focuses more on the three teams and players working together. That does sound awesome, but in my opinion, something even more exciting might be on its way…the long-awaited legendary Pokémon.

We know that the legendary Pokémon are coming sometime this year, and seeing as Niantic has already released Gen 2 Pokémon, I assume the first gen legendary ones namely Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, Mew and of course Mewtwo will be first to appear in the augmented reality wilds.

The Silph Road did some digging into a small hotfix update released recently, and discovered a few interesting strings of text, pointing towards one of the “new cooperative social gameplay experiences” being called raids. You can read the strings below:

  • "nearby_raid_notification_toast|1" "There's a raid about to start near you!"
  • "nearby_raid_notification_toast|2" "A raid's going to start nearby!"

The word “raid” really jumped out for me here, as indicates a lot of players potentially participating, not just two or three. Which brings me to the question, what is the one thing in Pokémon lore that requires more than one person to take on? The answer is simple: Legendary Pokémon!

The strings could also point towards potential raids on gyms with multiple powerful defenders. However, one thing that keeps on rumbling around in my brain is that scene from the original 2015 trailer (at 1:51) for Pokémon GO (embedded at the end of this article). In the image below captured from the trailer, a woman receives a notification in Times Square that a raid is about to start, then rushes with hundreds of hours to battle Mewtwo. There is also a “Raid Joined” message. If that is not a clear indication that raids will introduce legendary Pokémon, I don’t know what is.

Niantic confirmed that there will be three big feature updates coming this year, so we might be looking at the first one soon. If raids do not introduce legendary Pokémon, then I don’t know what will, because it feels like the perfect opportunity to do just that, and for example, the planned trading feature isn’t exactly the right fit.

Please keep in mind that this is just my opinion and we will have to see if it turns out to be accurate. At the time of writing, Niantic has not confirmed that the next feature update will introduce legendary Pokémon.

Do you think the teased co-op experience has something to do with Legendary Pokémon, or what else could it be? Let us know in the comment section below.
