Pokemon GO has an impressive monthly player count according to Niantic

Yesterday I reported on a worrying statistic, as it looks like the active users for Pokémon GO dropped dramatically in the period from the game’s release until the end of last year in the US. However, the number of active users globally is what really matters, right? Well, it seems like developer Niantic Labs’ augmented reality sensation is just that, a global sensation!

Business Insider reports that at the London Games Festival during the Mixed Reality Summit, Niantic CEO John Hanke announced that the game is “still healthy and thriving”, with 65 million monthly active users. Clearly, there are a lot of trainers out there and the game is doing extremely well.

Further, Mr. Hanke spoke about Augmented Reality (AR), which is of course at the heart of Pokémon GO’s gameplay. According to GameSpot, Mr. Hanke thinks AR has a “huge amount of potential” to do things that have “a positive impact on humanity”. Further, Mr. Hanke explained at the Mixed Reality Summit that “There is research about the health impact of Pokemon Go in particular but you can expand that to apply to all AR games".

Mr. Hanke continues by explaining that: "These games can encourage people to be more active than they would normally be. As a parent, part of my motivation for building this kind of game was to try and get my kids out of the house. I think there's a ton of good that can be done." - Source

So not only is Pokémon GO a massive success, but also has benefits for society. Well done Niantic, well done. With that being said, one can’t help but wonder what is next for Pokémon GO. The Global Water Festival is over, and of course, players are hoping for another stellar in-game event, which led to a jaw-dropping statistic. Well, Easter is coming up and according to multiple rumours, there might be an event on the way.

At the time of writing, there is no official word from the developer about an Easter in-game event, but we will let you know as soon as Niantic reveals something about the next possible event. Then, there is of course also three big feature updates planned for this year, so it looks like Pokémon GO will continue to thrive for a very long time if the developer keeps doing what they are doing.

What do you think about the new active monthly user statistic revealed by Niantic and what do you hope to see from a possible Easter in-game event? Let us know in the comment section below.
