2016 Marked the year when eSports aired on national Television. SuperSport Kicked off with their announcement in March 2016 about broadcasting the highlights of the IEM World Championship. In April Top Billing took a tour of the Cape Town rAge expo and South African eSports featured for the first time. In May, SuperSport covered the massive ELeague CS:GO tournament with coverage also including Overwatch. Then finally, in October 2016 Carte Blanche joined by including a few eSports moments from rAge Johannesburg. While we are incredibly grateful for the coverage, it felt more like all three channels were 'flirting' with the idea of SA gaming and eSports - all that is changing in May when SuperSport launches a dedicated eSports channel - and it will broadcast both local and international events.
SuperSport partnered with GINX esports TV, a 24/7 esports and gaming network to bring "the biggest and best events from around the globe" to South Africa.
Michiel Bakker, CEO of GINX esports TV, commented: “We’re delighted to bring GINX esports TV to South Africa. It’s an exciting time to be launching in a country with such a rapidly growing eSports scene.
GINX esports TV will provide South African fans with the biggest and best events from around the globe. We also look forward to working closely with MultiChoice and SuperSport to broadcast local eSports events.”
Gideon Khobane, CEO of SuperSport, said: “The deal with GINX is a massive leap forward and signals our intention to embrace the newest sport out there. There is a real buzz around esports and we want to be part of that.”
We are, of course, excited about all those international events, but it's the announcement about covering local eSports that have our attention. South Africa already has two R1 million eSports tournaments (Telkom's is R1.5 million) lined up for the year, and a host of other, smaller events. It took years to get us to this place where eSports and gaming is acknowledged by SA's most prestigious Sports broadcaster as something worth pouring resources into. We thank every gamer, contributor and organization who played a part in getting SA gaming to this place.
