Ghost Recon Wildlands gets M+ rating for violence, sexual themes and more

The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) gave Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Wildlands, the upcoming tactical shooter from Ubisoft, an age rating of M+. The Mature 17+ rating is mostly for "Intense Violence" and "Use of Drugs." Ghost Recon: Wildlands is about the Santa Blanca drug cartel - the world's dominate cocaine producer, and the United State Military's response to the spreading influence of the cartel.

The plot revolve around mature themes, and the ESRB rating was, therefore, to be expected. The world of drugs goes hand in hand with excessive violence, sexual themes and so on.

"A few scenes depict mutilated bodies among large pools of blood; a handful of cutscenes show enemies holding severed heads dripping with blood. The game includes some sexual material: a woman slapping a man in bed while straddling his waist (both figures are clothed); brief photographic images of a woman's breasts. The game includes several drug references in the storyline, and the use of drugs: a man being forced to sniff several lines of cocaine; various images of marijuana and cocaine. The words “f**k” and “sh*t” are heard in the dialogue," explains the ESRB.

I am not in favour of violence or sexual content in video games for the sake of drawing a certain type of player, but given the setting of Ghost Recon: Wildlands it's not only acceptable but required, as it compliments the authenticity of the story.

Ghost Recon: Wildlands releases on March 7 for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
