GabeN talks Half-Life, Steam porn, a new IP and more

Valve’s co-founder and president, Gabe Logan Newell (GabeN) announced earlier this week that he would be doing a Reddit Ask Me Anything (AMA). GabeN finished up the AMA yesterday, providing some interesting answers about a variety of subjects, including that Valve is working on a new single-player game.

Let’s get right to it and rip the Band-Aid off. The first thing that is of course on everybody’s mind is Half-Life 3, especially after the Game Informer article where an anonymous source talked about the development of the game, or rather the lack thereof.

Reddit user Baldemoto asked about the HL3 or HL2 Episode 3, if Valve is working on any “fully fledged single-player games” and if the anonymous source was legitimate, GabeN responded by stating that: “The number 3 must not be said. Yes. I personally believe all unidentified anonymous sources on the Internet.”

You can take that answer as you like, but it seems like neither a confirmation nor denial of the existence or possibility of HL3 sometime in the future and his comment on the anonymous source indicates that at the very least, not all the information was accurate. GabeN did mention HL regrets in another answer, stating that: “The issue with Half-Life for me is that I was involved in a much higher percentage of the decisions about the games, so it's hard for me to look at them as anything other than a series of things I regret.”

However, the one big thing that came from his answer above is that Valve is indeed working on new single-player game(s). GabeN revealed more interesting information, which you can find summarized below:

  • Two movies in the HL / Portal universe confirmed with a short answer: "Yep. They're coming."
  • With regards to Valve’s Source Engine 2, the company will continue to use it as their “primary game development environment” and they are using it for some “unannounced products”, which means the new single-player game GabeN confirmed is in the works will definitely use Source 2. Further, GabeN states that: “We also intend to continue to make the Source 2 engine work available to the broad developer community as we go, and to make it available free of charge.” I recently reported on a rumour that there might be a new Counter-Strike, which could be one of the unannounced projects, or Valve might be porting CS: GO to the Source 2 engine.
  • GabeN talks about pornographic games: "In principle, there are two problems to solve. The first is a completely uncurated distribution tool for developers. The second is a toolset for customers that allow them to find and filter content (and people are an instance of content most obviously in multiplayer) that is best for them."
  • When asked by user Air_chandler what direction GabeN sees Valve as a company taking in the future, he comments: “The big thing right now is broadening the range of options we have in creating experiences. We think investing in hardware will give us those options. The knuckles controller is being designed at the same time as we’re designing our own VR games.” Further, GabeN mentions that he is personally “looking at research in brain-computer interfaces.”
  • Portal 2 is Valve’s best single-player game according to GabeN. He also mentions that he plays all of Valve’s multiplayer games, but players Dota 2 the most.
  • GabeN talks about the direction Valve took with free-to-play and multiplayer games and mentions the Left 4 Dead franchise: "When we decided we needed to work on markets, free to play, and user generated content, Team Fortress seemed like the right place to do that. That work ended up informing everything we did in the multiplayer space. Left 4 Dead is a good place for creating shared narratives."
  • There might be a new IP, possibly the single-player game mentioned earlier, set in the Half-Life or Portal universe. When asked if there is a possibility of a new IP that takes place within the aforementioned universes, GabeN replied with a short-but-sweet “Yep”.

What do you think the new Valve IP or single-player game could be and do you think there is any hope left for Half-Life 3? Let us know in the comment section below.
