The biggest console tournament in SA gets even more exciting

At the end of August, we reported about South Africa’s biggest console tournament. The Call of Duty World League (CWL) Monster AstroGaming (MAG) Cup presented by PlayStation and hosted by African Cyber Gaming League (ACGL).

The tournament boasts a massive prize pool of R120 000 in cash with an additional R20 000 worth of ASTRO Gaming gear, R5000 worth of KontrolFreek gear and some Monster swag.

With the online qualifiers now complete, the top eight teams now look towards the LAN finals at rAge. But there’s more…A lot more actually. CWL MAG Cup has announced via a Press Release that the LAN finals will feature a renowned international caster and a celebrity challenge to kick things off. In combination with the celebrity challenges comes a voting competition, where you could win an amazing hamper.

Renowned caster Ben ‘Benson’ Bowe

“Monster Energy, ASTRO Gaming, PlayStation, KontrolFreek, Always On and African Cyber Gaming League (ACGL) in conjunction with the Call of Duty World League are proud to reveal that at the CWL MAG Cup at rAge 2016, internationally renowned caster, Ben ‘Benson’ Bowe will be joining the team of local casters for the LAN finals.

The CWL MAG Cup is already shaping up to be the biggest Call of Duty console tournament in South Africa with over R120 000 in prizes and gear up for grabs.

Now, with the online qualifiers for the CWL MAG Cup complete and the final eight teams ready to battle in front of a live audience at rAge in Johannesburg, as well as being streamed live to the Call of Duty community in South Africa and internationally, the addition of Benson to the list of casters promises to level up this epic Call of Duty event even further.

Benson was born in the United Kingdom and has been a familiar and popular face of eSports broadcasts over the years, becoming an MLG presenter in 2012. He has been part of the Call of Duty Championships broadcast team in 2013, 2014 and 2015, and only missed 2016 due to illness.”

Benson will be joining South African casters Nick ‘HoldenZA’ Holden, Cristiano ‘Tiano10_ZA’ Dos Ramos, Clint ‘CS1977’ Smith and more at the Ticketpro Dome for rAge from 7 to 9 October 2016.

Holden has the following to say regarding the addition of Benson to the event:

“The acquisition of Benson to our casting line up at the CWL MAG Cup is invaluable to the Southern African community. He brings with him a specialized skill set in his vast knowledge of eSports and casting that can only help to improve and further our level of production in the competitive console community. I have been fortunate to have shoutcasted alongside the boisterous Brit in the past and am ecstatic that I will have the opportunity to do so again.”

In his announcement video which you can view below, Benson said that “the South African community has always been a favourite of mine since I started my eSports career and I cannot wait to get out there and meet you all.”

Celebrity Challenge

“The Call of Duty Celebrity Challenge will mark the close the eSports Branding Summit and usher in the start of the MAG Cup, and will see two celebrity teams face each other in a battle for glory. The two teams – Team Red and Team Blue – will be led by captains from the top two seeded teams participating in the MAG Cup.

Team Red will feature musician Jack Parow, comedian Jason Goliath and rugby player Rohan Janse van  Rensburg, with team captain being  Ismail “Jakez” Jacobs from eN_Astra. Team Blue will be led by Insane Gaming’s Kaelin “Tanker” Govender and will feature journalist Pippa Tshabalala, musician AKA and comedian Deep Fried Man.

More about Team Red

  • Ismail “Jakez” Jacobs: This 32-year-old Call of Duty player has the most tournament wins in the country and has been playing since the release of Call of Duty 4 in 2007. He runs his own retail business when not captaining the Energy eSports Call of Duty console team.
  • Jack Parow: Zander Tyler better known by his stage name Jack Parow is an Afrikaner rapper from Cape Town, South Africa.
  • Jason Goliath: Jason Goliath is a South African comedian and actor best known for his recurring role as Gatiep, in the SABC1 sitcom Ses’Top La. In 2015 he was one of the 10 celebrity contestants on the eighth season of the reality competition series Strictly Come Dancing. In 2016, he began hosting the late night talk show Larger than Life on SABC3.
  • Rohan Janse van Rensburg: Rohan Janse van Rensburg is a South African rugby union player, currently playing with the Lions in Super Rugby and the Golden Lions XV in Currie Cup rugby. His regular position is centre.

  • Kaelin “Tanker” Govender: The leader of Insane Gaming has been playing since the release of Call of Duty Black Ops on 2010 and at 21 is currently studying to be a CA.
  • Pippa Tshabalala: Pippa Tshabalala is the former presenter of The Verge. She currently writes about games and makes TV.
  • AKA: Kiernan Jarryd Forbes, known by his stage name AKA, is a South African hip hop recording artist and record producer.
  • Deep Fried Man: Daniel Friedman, known on stage as Deep Fried Man, is a South African musical comedian and writer based in Johannesburg. He describes what he does as “stand-up comedy with a guitar”.

The celebrity match will be played live on the MAG Cup stage at rAge on 7 October 2016 from 1:30pm. If you can’t make it to rAge this year, you can also watch the celebrity match live on the day here.

Voting competition

“To celebrate this epic battle of celebrities – and to get you to pick a side – there will be a chance for supporters to win an exclusive hamper sponsored by Monster Energy, ASTRO Gaming, KontrolFreek, Always On and NAG.

The hamper includes a case of Monster Energy drink, 5GB of Always On data, an Astro A40TR with MixAmp for PS4, as well as some epic KontrolFreek and NAG goodies.
