Sony reveals the PlayStation Pro featuring 4K and HDR gaming | Updates

Andrew House, President and Global CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, took the stage at the PlayStation Meeting in New York, announcing that the PS4 has sold over 40 million units.  The PS4 Slim is the new “standard model”. It will be available on September 15 in “most markets” and cost $299.

Shortly afterwards, Mr. House announced the PS4 Pro (codename Neo) and handed the stage over to PlayStation Architect Mark Cerny to explain what the PS4 Pro is all about.

PS4 Pro - Everything we know so far

The PS4 Pro will be priced at $399 and will release on 10 November 2016. Now that we have the release date and pricing out of the way, here's everything we learned about the PS4 Pro at the PlayStation Meeting,

Mr. Cerny discussed the PS4 Pro’s ability to stream 4K and High Dynamic Range (HDR) content. At the time of writing, the exact specifications for the PS4 Pro is unknown. However, Sony did unveil that the console will have a "faster CPU and upgraded GPU". It can run games at a “reliable 60fps in 1080p” and will have a 1TB harddrive. Sony states that their goal with the PS4 Pro is to “deliver high-fidelity graphical experiences”

Mr. Cerny showed off the impressive range of games running on the PS4 Pro and a 4K display, starting with the new Spiderman game, then For Honor and continuing onto Deus Ex: Mankind Divided with an “extreme level of detail” on display. Further, Watch_Dogs 2 on the PS4 Pro looks absolutely gorgeous. Watch some of the "existing and upcoming games that will take advantage of the PS4 Pro's power below.

Additional details revealed:

  • Many of the games will receive updates to work with the PS4 Pro and take advantage of its added speed.
  • Even if you don’t own a 4K display, you will still benefit from the PS4 Pro’s increased power with increased display quality and better frame rates.
  • According to Sony, the PS4 Pro will bring about a “transformation regarding how players experience their favorite games”
  • One of the games that that will push the boundaries with the PS4 Pro is Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. The game, including the Modern Warfare Remaster will support the PS4 Pro on launch and will run at 60 FPS.
  • Electronic Arts is supporting the PS4 Pro and will bring amazing graphical detail to their latest games, including Battlefield 1 and the upcoming Mass Effect: Andromeda, combining the power of the PS4 Pro with their Frostbyte engine.
  • Every PS4, from "the first PS4 sold", will receive a firmware upgrade to support HDR.

Sony Explains that: "With PlayStation 4 Pro our goal is to deliver innovation in the form of cutting-edge visuals and graphics while in the midst of the PS4’s lifecycle" and continues by stating that the PS4 Pro "enhances PS4 games by supporting the latest in imaging technology through 4K resolution and High Dynamic Range (HDR), as well as smoother frame rates. Games that already look extraordinary on PS4 will look richer and more detailed, thanks to the more powerful GPU and faster CPU at the heart of PS4 Pro." - Source

If you are a standard PS4 owner, you don't have to worry about missing out on games or features. Sony explains that: "But it’s important to note that the choice is yours. Whether you’re playing on PS4 Pro, the new slimmer and lighter PS4, or the PS4 system you bought at launch in 2013, you’ll have access to the same amazing games with the same features and same vibrant community that make PlayStation the best place to play." - Source
