Tested | PS4 remote play - PC and SA bandwidth requirements

PS4 Remote Play test.jpg

PlayStation 4's 3.50 system software update rolls out today and with it comes remote play for PC and Mac, as well as new social features. Remote play is not compatible with Windows 7, and resolution and frame rate depends on your Internet bandwidth - plus no 1080p no matter your bandwidth. PlayStation also recommends upload and download speeds of at least 12 Mbps when using remote play. So, for South African gamers that mean you can use remote play only if you have fibre that is, at least 20Mbps, or faster (you don't get a 12Mbps line in SA - 10 and 20 are the speeds). Check out MWEB's fibre to the home options here.

Updates

According to PlayStation Access, PS4 remote play for PC and Mac works the same way as it does on PlayStation Vita, PlayStation TV and the Sony Xperia. So, that means you should be able to use it over a local connection (or over the Internet.). We are busy testing both modes and will update the article.

  • Test 1 - 4Meg line over WiFi: On a 4meg line we're struggling to keep it connected even with medium settings. We repeatedly get the error message, "The internet connection speed is currently too slow to start Remote Play."
  • Test 2 - MCave Super Line: For the second test we used MWEB's super super line in the MCave - which means a fibre line for SA gamers. The download speed clocked in at around 115meg and the upload speed at around 6meg (according to the PS4 network test). Remote play to PC was running fine even on high settings at the capped 720p.
  • Test 3 - LAN: PS4 remote play via LAN works (obviously games that require internet don't). However, even on LAN, Black Ops 3 had stuttering frames on high settings. But at least it works for those desperate enough to play PS4 games on a PC.

Remote play on PC & Mac - Operating System

  • Windows 8.1
  • Windows 10 or later
  • OS X 10.10
  • OS X 10.11

Remote play resolution & frame rate options:

You can download the PlayStation 4 remote play installer here. Remember, remote play depends heavily on your Internet bandwidth - the resolution and frame rate you'll get will therefore vary. Also, don't forget you need to use the Dualshock 4.
