Is your ISP to blame for World of Warcraft's recent Errors and Disconnects?

WoW issues.jpg

Recently World of Warcraft has been suffering a number of errors most notably; WOW51900314, WOW51900319 and WOW51900329 to name but a few. At first (only after nine days), Blizzard has not been forthcoming with information regarding these errors and have referred players to their ISP's. Being a WoW player myself I, of course, get this error too and not wanting to take Blizzard on their word, I did a few tests to see if the issues are really as Blizzard says ISP related.

  • Test 1 - Try a different network: When WoW failed on me (and the wife for that matter), I decided to switch to MTN HSDPA. The same error occurred. I also flushed the DNS and made sure that I'm not routing through the DSL.
  • Test 2 - Play other Blizzard games: Since I have Hearthstone and Diablo 3 loaded on my machine I played both and they worked perfectly, with no drops. Now, you might think this doesn't qualify as a test, so let me explain. MWEB prioritises (gaming) Blizzard traffic by prioritising their IP blocks - Diablo 3, Hearthstone, WoW, Overwatch and Starcraft 2 all sit in the same IP blocks - thus telling me that our routing to the IP blocks are good with sub 170ms pings to these games. Thus pointing out that it is something relating only to the WoW servers.
  • Test 3 - Try WTFast: As a tunneling application WTFast ignores anything we do on our network (routing included), and sends the traffic via their routes. It had the same outcome - WoW errors.
  • Test 4 - Ran it off the MCave LAN: Just in case 4Mb wasn't enough for WoW to work properly I gave it the full 800Mbps bandwidth to use. No luck, I still WoW errors.

The most damning evidence, however, is the fact that all these issues started after Blizzard patched WoW last week. The long list of errors all started happening afterwards with a near 50-page thread going on the EU forums for WoW, and a large amount of single threads and a 23 pager happening on the US forums.

MWEB will continue to investigate these issues, of course, and if we find a proper working workaround for this issue we will update this article. You can check out Blizzard's progress and fixes for the issues here.
