February 2016 is shaping up to be a good one for fans of eSports and events in South Africa. There is plenty of variety on the agenda, and the year itself is looking a good one, so don't go thinking that South Africa never has anything happening...

**UPDATE**

The scheduled MSSA StarCraft 2 test matches against Sweden have been cancelled due to "unforeseen and unfortunate circumstances". They were originally scheduled to happen between 8-14 February.

MGMS Black Ops 3 First Recon

  • Info: The first tournament of the MWEB GameZone Masters Series kicks off on 8 February. Teams will be playing for their share of R6,000 cash. You will be able to catch some of the action live – details of the streams will be announced in the coming weeks.

GAC LAN

  • Info: Cape Town’s current most regular LAN providers, Gamers Anonymous cLan are at it again with a LAN at their regular Bothasig venue. You can expect the usual socialising and gaming to be on the agenda from Friday evening until Sunday morning.

Halo World Championship

  • Info: South African team Vinco Gaming head to Cologne in Germany to face 11 other teams from the EMEA regions where they will play for one of four spots in the grand final of the Halo World Championship. Unfortunately, the only way to support the team from SA will be via the live stream – unless you’re lucky enough to be in Germany for the event of course.

  • Info: The MSSA has a number of test matches scheduled for February, with the first being FIFA 16 against African counterpart Ghana.

Game Arena Dota II 1v1 Tournament

  • Info: Dota 2 is the first February event from Game Arena. Players will have all the equipment needed supplied at the venue and there will be vouchers up for grabs. Cooler Master South Africa is hosting a Hearthstone as part of its ongoing series of tournaments culminating in a championship in May 2016. Players will be awarded points over the various events hosted with the top 16 returning for the finals. Please remember to bring along your own mobile device to play.

Cape Town International Animation Festival

  • Info: While this is not strictly a gaming – or even a geek – event, without animation, neither of those pastimes would actually exist. So if you’re in Cape Town over the weekend of the event, it might be something you would like to consider. Alongside the more traditional business, speeches and conference focused aspects of the event, there will also be an Artist Alley featuring some talented local artists.

Game Arena HotS 2016 Open

  • Info: This tournament in February to March is a qualifier for a “larger” tournament scheduled for Q3 of 2016. Up for grabs for the winning team in the qualifier are Cooler Master goodies, and a shot at the main event later this year. Registrations will close on 24 February for the tournament.
