SteelSeries DeX Gaming Mousepad Review

Main Image.jpg

Well, here’s something you don’t generally get to review on a regular basis. A mousepad. Sure, a headset, keyboard and even a mouse itself is pretty normal in this line of ‘work’, but a mousepad? Well, this is my first, so don’t you go judging me now.

Size doesn’t always matter

But surely a mousepad is a mousepad is a mousepad you say? Well, that was exactly what I thought when I first got my hands on the SteelSeries DeX Gaming Mousepad. First impressions were not great. One of the only requirements (or preferences at least) I have for a mousepad is that I want real estate. Size matters for me and my current (insert other brand name here) mousepad measures a whopping 40% larger than the DeX does. Now while the SteelSeries mousepad only measures 320x270mm, the surface finish actually means that size is not the thing that really matters.

The useable side of the SteelSeries DeX mousepad is a honeycomb finished hard-wearing polymer surface that is nothing like the cloth mousepads you are more likely used to. The majority of this surface actually sits below the hexagonal ridges, and this allows for low friction and highly responsive movements, with the mouse never once feeling sluggish during use. The bottom of the mousepad is made from silicon that really did prove to be completely non-slip, even when the excitement got the better of me.

Built to last

The mousepad generally feels great, especially in its ‘build quality’. It is completely washable (and waterproof) and my general impression is that the mousepad may actually outlive your mouse. The edges are also well considered in terms of design and makes use of a sealed heat-bonding which the PR blurb promises “won’t wear down or fray further adding to the pad’s overall durability.”

The truth of the matter is I completely believe that to be true as previous experience with most mousepads saw the first signs of wear around the edges of the mousepad.

The SteelSeries DeX Gaming Mousepad is not meant to be used for surfing the internet or playing Solitaire. It has clearly been designed for gaming and for gamers who are keen to get every last bit of advantage they can when playing competitively. If you want me to say the mousepad made my skills in a first-person shooter a million times better, I’d have to lie. I’m pretty sure the only thing that will improve that for me will be cybernetics, because… old age and slow reactions.

It comes with a premium price point to boot (R537 on Raru and R610 on Takealot) but even with the reduced real estate area, I know the minute I return to my old mousepad I will wish I could feel the gentle honeycomb ridges once again. And based on the quality of the mousepad, I’m pretty sure you will spend the same replacing cheaper ones every few years.

If you’re looking for the ultimate compliment to your gaming and gaming mouse, then you need look no further than the SteelSeries DeX Gaming Mousepad. Your mouse will approve.
