One of my favourite comedy's of all time is the Zucker brother’s Police Squad! There are fantastic scenes in an elevator where Leslie Nielson is engaged in some form of dialogue. It’s a repeated gag that the elevator stops intermittently at random floors where the most random things are happening. People going to war and even leading onto a diving board. This said something profound to me: An elevator is an inherently funny and awkward space.
have leveraged this awkward humour to bring us one of the most interesting Half-Life 2 mods I’ve seen in ages, Elevator: Source. The game’s page has a lot of promise and fills you with a remarkable sense of hope: “Elevator: Source is a single or co-op elevator experience that is different each time you play. What floor will you stop on next? What will happen? Who knows! We don't even know! And we made the game. It's THAT EXCITING.”
In a dark, morbid and humorous way, they’re right. The game acts like a giant lobby. Literally. A strange chat room where you jump in with random strangers. Instead of your traditional Deathmatch or Capture the Flag, there seems to be no objective except to step inside the elevator. You stop off at randomized floors (right now there are only 28 of them) and random stuff happens. You’re never given an objective which confuses the entire lobby. You are given a slap button and a ‘look at watch’ button. That’s it. It makes for a rather bizzare and compelling social experience.
It’s surreal and subtly cool, making me think it’s the video game experience of the Alice in Wonderland novel. Have some random, eccentric fun and install this gem
