Just shy of a year ago, I did a Retro Friday about an indie developer calling himself Sprybug who was creating a port of the original Super Mario Bros. for the classic Atari 2600. Since that report Sprybug, or Chris Spry, as his mother calls him, has completed his game and it's now available for purchase.

Now called Princess Rescue, the game is a compressed version of the NES original, featuring only 16 levels, where the original had 32. Other than that and the lower visual acuity, the game is a pretty faithful interpretation. The gameplay is largely similar and the audio sounds surprisingly close.

What's makes this 'demake' - as Spry calls it - most surprising is that it isn't just code that emulates Atari 2600 software, the game exists as an actual cartridge, with an accompanying manual. If you happen to have an Atari 2600 lying around somewhere and you were in the market for a new game, then your opportunity to get one has finally arrived. The game is available on Atari Age for $30

Oh and Spry's next project is Atari 2600 version of Sonic the Hedgehog. Can't wait for that one.
