Microsoft announces the end of Xbox Live Rewards

by Nicholas Holden (Holden ZA)  Posted Friday, July 12, 2013 12:50:00 PM

The Xbox Live reward system rewarded players for purchases as well as special occasions, such as birthdays. These rewards take the shape of Microsoft (MS) points that participants of the program receive for renewing Xbox Live subscription or purchasing more MS points. Microsoft have now stated that they will no longer be running this program, as the it will be phased out on the 1st of August.

"Starting August 1, 2013, you will not be able to earn Microsoft Points through Xbox Live Rewards any longer." wrote Microsoft in a recent statement to its participants.

The change comes with the recent announcement from Microsoft regarding the Xbox One. The change that relates to the rewards program is the introduction of new currency system that will require players to purchase content in their local currency pricing. This new system will completely remove the current MS points method of payment.

Does this mean all your precious MS points will disappear into thin air come August 1st? Not to worry, all of your outstanding reward points will be deposited in your account on the 7th of August 2013. Then when it comes time for the real currency program to commence, all of your remaining MS points will be converted into the currency that your profile is registered on.

So will this mark the end of the reward system for Xbox Live users? Microsoft insists that it wont, "You’ll continue to get rewarded for doing the things you love on Xbox Live – just not with Microsoft Points." The full details of the new revised program will become available in September, where players will be waiting to see, fingers crossed, if the new program will in fact be more beneficial than the current.

It looks like Microsoft will be moving to a more broad rewards based program for their customers come August and September. Xbox gamers can get a an early start at the Microsoft real world money program by registering for the pulic beta program, for more check it out here

What do you think about the changes from Microsoft regarding the reward program? Do you think that they new rewards system will be more beneficial than the current one?
