The internet is full of all sorts of wonderful forgotten and ignored information. The Occulus Rift VR visor is being tested on a racing simulator. If you had the finances, and the hardware setup setup capable of driving such a high-end setup the sense of immersion could be amazing.

For those not in the know iRacing is a premier racing simulator for the PC. It offers some of the most realistic experiences that gamers can do in a structured, almost real-world setup. The current development version of Occulus Rift uses a 1280x800 resolution, split horizontally to create two 640x800 units per eye. The final consumer version will be able to split a 1920x1080 resolution between two eyes. To put that into perspective, it's taking 2073600 pixels, split into both eyes to cover over ninety degrees of vision. The pixel count on such a small LCD is something better than what Apple has done on their retina screens. The visor also uses 3-axis gyrosaccelerometers, and magnetometers in order to detect movement both horizontal and vertical.

The visor will use HDMI and DVI inputs as well as usb to feed data into the host machine to control the display. Adopters of the system include:

  1. Valve
  2. ID Software
  3. Epic Games

Other games using the visor include:

  1. Scrolls V: Skyrim
  2. Dear Esther
  3. Portal 1 and 2
  4. Doom 3: BFG Edition
  5. Flight Simulator X
  6. Bioshock Infinite

Here's another demo of someone taking on a rollercoaster simulation:

To finish off, here's a  humorous video of Half-life 2 using The Occulus Rift:
