With the introduction of the Sixaxis controller at the launch of the PlayStation 3, Sony was playing also-ran to Nintendo's Wiimote. The Sixaxis was embarrassing in it's implementation and not a single game on the system that made (forced) use of it's shoddy motion control ended up the better for using it. With the Dualshock 4 for the PlayStation 4, Sony has had a lot more time to think about what it wanted to do with the controls extra features and it seems that additional time has paid off.
Now, combined with the Kinect - I mean PS Eye - Sony has innovated some very interesting uses for the system, combining motion control, touchpad controls, augmented reality and just plain goofy fun. Engadget was treated to an interesting tech demo of the Dualshock 4's abilities. It's pretty interesting stuff and while what is shown here isn't gameplay and provides some really interesting insight into future gameplay possibilities.
Apologies for the shoddy sound in the video.
