Release date: June 4

Platform: PC, Xbox 360 & PlayStation 3

Age Restriction: Mature

Price: PC R375, Console R563 (Kalahari.com)

Genre: Action

Synopsis: The game is set in the year 2084, in a futuristic version of Paris called Neo-Paris. In the story, Mega-corporation MEMORIZE has invented a new brain implant called the Sensation Engine (Sensen), which enables roughly 99% of the population to upload and share their actual memories on the net. This gives MEMORIZE an immense degree of control over the population and enables them to establish a surveillance state. This, in turn, leads to a small group of rebels forming under the name "Errorists": their mission is to bring down MEMORIZE.

The invention of the Sensen has also resulted in the creation of Leapers: formally memory-addicted humans, they have absorbed so many memories through the net that their Sensen has degraded and they have mutated into a subhuman form, now living in the sewers of Neo-Paris. You play as Nilin a memory hunter employed by MEMORIZE who specialized in stealing or altering memories, has her own memory wiped by her employers. Now on the run, Nilin allies with the Errorists and, with help from the rebel leader Edge, sets out to recover her lost memories and bring down MEMORIZE.

Gameplay: Remember Me features exploration, platforming, stealth, and melee combat. The game introduces the mechanic of 'memory remixing': entering and rearranging a target's memories to manipulate them. Players accomplish this by replaying a memory and modifying details to change the target's recollection of the outcome. Another key mechanic of gameplay is stealing memories from specific targets and using points called Remembranes to replay the memory in real-time: this is often needed to proceed through the game or avoid hazards otherwise hidden from the player. When the player is low on health, the screen will glitch until a sufficient amount of health is regained.

In terms of combat, the game will allow players to create and customize their own move combos in the Combo Lab, which uses four families of fighting moves called Pressens that players can reorganize by creating chains, earned through gaining PMP (Procedural Mastering Power), with a limit of four combos being active at any one time. The four Pressen families are "Regen" (healing), "Power" (damage), "Chain" (duplication and doubling of previous moves) and "Cooldown" (regeneration of S-Pressen energy). Moris has said that there are 50,000 possible Pressen combinations. The special moves, S-Pressens, are made available to the player through the course of the game: the moves enabling them to do things like stun groups of enemies, move at high speed and land more hits, or turn hostile robots into allies which then self-destruct.

The Last of Us

the-last-of-us.jpg

Release date: June 14

Platform: PlayStation 3

Age Restriction: Mature

Price: R569 (Kalahari.com)

Genre: Action-adventure survival horror video game

Synopsis: The story is set two decades after a cordyceps-type fungus has killed millions, with nature gradually retaking the abandoned cities and towns. The survivors are hemmed inside quarantine zones, completely under the heel of the United States military, with order and screening for any Infected being viciously maintained under martial law. Joel, a hardened black-marketeer within one of the quarantine zones, goes through an event which makes him promise an old friend that he will get a young, fourteen year old girl named Ellie, away from the harsh regime to a resistance group known as the Fireflies. They begin a journey through the U.S., avoiding the Infected, humanoid creatures whose sole aim has become spreading the fungal infection. Joel and Ellie also have to avoid scavengers that survive outside the quarantine zones who see Joel and Ellie as their latest prey. Adding to their problems, the military is determined to find Ellie and bring her back under their power.

Gameplay: The Last of Us uses a third-person perspective and will take control of Joel, while Ellie will be controlled by the AI. The game will involve gun fighting and melee combat as well as a cover system. The player will fight off the Infected — former humans — and the Survivors — humans that are not infected, but are hostile towards Joel and Ellie. A new gameplay mechanic is a feature the developers call "dynamic stealth", meaning that there are many different types of strategies and techniques that the player can use at any given time as they approach a new situation, to which enemies will react differently.

Naughty Dog have developed an AI system called "Balance of Power". This new system allows enemies to react realistically to any combat situation they are placed in by taking cover if they see the player, calling for help if they need it and even taking advantage of the players weaknesses, such as when Joel runs out of ammunition or when he is being attacked by other enemies.

Company of Heroes 2

2013_company_of_heroes_2.jpg

Release date: June 25

Platform: PC

Age Restriction: Mature

Price: R319 (Kalahari.com)

Genre: Real-time strategy game

Synopsis: The game's story will focus on the Eastern Front campaign as narrated through flashbacks by Lev Abramovich Isakovich, a Soviet Army lieutenant locked up at a gulag in Siberia in 1952. An Army officer interrogates him about his experiences during the war.

Gameplay: The game will feature the Soviet Red Army as a new faction and will take the player on various stages of the Eastern Front campaign, from Operation Barbarossa to the Battle of Berlin. The game is built on Relic's proprietary Essence 3.0 engine, which showcases new improvements compared to Relic's previous games. One such improvements is the new line-of-sight technology, TrueSight  which aims to better emulate troop visibility in real combat. In contrast with traditional unit visibility, TrueSight more accurately represents a unit's visibility range based on environmental conditions and type of unit. Essence 3.0 will also incorporate an innovative weather-simulating technology known as ColdTech and destructible environments. Weather conditions will be a major factor in gameplay, with movement and action penalties applied on players' units.

Since many battles in the Eastern Front occurred in winter weather, troops can die of frostbite if caught in the outside during blizzards. Bonfires protect soldiers from the cold at the expense of enemy detection. Players moving through deep snow will move at a reduced speed. Certain maps will have frozen bodies of water, allowing for more movement options. However, players face the danger of being attacked from the other side; as a result, the ice can buckle under the weight of the units in movement.

Deadpool

deadpool_game.jpg

Release date: June 25

Platform: PC

Age Restriction: Mature

Price: R287(Kalahari.com)

Genre: Action

Synopsis: The story is set with Deadpool accepting a mission to assassinate News Reporter Chance White a corrupt media mogul, whose television channel produces such quality programming as “Jump the Shark”, in which celebrities must literally jump over a tank of water containing a ravenous great white shark. The plot also involves Mister Sinister who is scouring a former mutant haven called Genosha for new DNA to use in his armies.

Gameplay: The game will be a third-person action game, with new combos becoming available to Deadpool as he progresses. The game will be a combination of melee and shooting, with huge emphasis in big hammers, sai, swords and guns. Deadpool will frequently break the fourth wall and verbally interact with the player based on their skill and progress. For instance, in the options menu, he will begin to tap the glass of the television set, before asking, “Hey, got any girls in there?” Deadpool has the opportunity to directly address the player, where he tells them to press a certain button to do certain commands.

When presented with the right combination of platforms, he wearily suggests new moves, such as the novel idea of ‘wall jumping’. Deadpool will also show some exaggerated acts of violence, like yelling “No guts no glory” when hanging from his entrails, or shouting “Oh that's gonna leave a mark” when dismembering an enemy. Combat gameplay relies heavily on using the character’s trademark arsenal of swords and guns, as well as giving players the option to equip more irregular weapons like sledgehammers.

By default Deadpool is armed with both guns and swords, but he also has access to giant hammers, laser guns, and a range of other alternatives. Some attacks result in dismemberment or decapitations; body parts and bloodstains can be seen on the ground. There’s a short range teleportation move as well. Since Deadpool possesses an accelerated healing factor, he will slowly fall apart as he sustains damage, and players will be presented with the choice either to reattach severed limbs or wait for them to regrow. Stealth attacks can also be employed, in which close-up camera angles depict more severe damage against enemies.
