This weekend saw a barrage of complaints heading in the direction of Microsoft, as the paid for service collapsed when players attempted to sign into their Xboxlive accounts. Users of the service were seeking an explanation for the service being down, and that came in the form of the hacktivist group Anonymous. A video claiming that the group was behind the attack has seen a response from Microsoft who state that the claim is completely false.

In a recent interview, a Microsoft representative told VideoGamer.com that the Xbox Live outage of the weekend was the result of a "networking misconfiguration during routine maintenance", and ,"in no way related to false claims of hacking the service."

Xbox Live was down for most of Sunday for South Africans, but American Xbox live members had it much worse, as the service was down for most of the weekend from Saturday night to Sunday afternoon.

During the outage Xbox Live outage there was an acknowledgment from Microsoft, as they told Xbox Live members that they were "hard at work fixing the issue members are having signing in to Xbox LIVE".

The outage came during one of Xbox Lives busiest events, known as Double XP weekend. This event is one of the most popular, due to the amount of people it attracts Xbox Live and Call of Duty:Black Ops 2. During double XP, players have the opportunity to rank up twice as fast. Due to the outage of service, many players were not able to take advantage of the event. As a result, the crew over at Treyarch have extended the Call of Duty XP weekend by one day, allowing players to have an extra to take part.

The period of Xbox Live outage is still believed to be the act of the hacktivist group by some, as a result of the recent announcement of the next Xbox console 'always online' feature.
