I was totally shocked when I read the article on Kotaku this morning - according to their sources, Disney shut down LucasArts, laying off some 150 people. To add to this, all the studio's current projects have been cancelled, which includes Star Wars: First Assault and Star Wars 1313.
This was the statement given by parent company "LucasFilm, "After evaluating our position in the games market, we’ve decided to shift LucasArts from an internal development to a licensing model, minimizing the company’s risk while achieving a broader portfolio of quality Star Wars games. As a result of this change, we’ve had layoffs across the organization. We are incredibly appreciative and proud of the talented teams who have been developing our new titles.”
Star Wars 1313 Cancelled
Sadly a promising game that is not likely to see the shelves, although there is hope that the title could be licensed out to another company to complete.
Star Wars: First Assault Cancelled
Star Wars fans were excited by the leaked news of what was thought to be Battlefront 3, but later was revealed as "predecessor" to that same title. Fans will have to remain disappointed, as its seems that this title will also not be coming out unless its licensed out as well.
A legacy of great gaming ends with LucasArts 1982-2013
I think the thing that I most sad about is this probably means I will never see a remake of Xwing vs Tie-fighter. However, here are some of the greatest games, in my opinion, that were developed by LucasArts:
- Maniac Mansion: Day of the Tentacle (I still quote lines from this 'til today)
- Monkey Island Series
- Dark Forces (the first game that ever gave me vertigo!)
- Armed and Dangerous (one of the funniest games I ever played)
- Maniac Mansion
- Rebel Assault
- Lego Star Wars
- Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
- Grim Fandango (by popular demand)
Day of the Tentacle, still one of the best game intros EVER
Sad day. RIP LucasArts and thank you for all the wonderful memories!!
