Gaming 365 days a year

While trawling through some of the older articles here on Mweb Gamezone, I came upon this list of game releases for March, put together by my commander-in-chief, Han. And I have to admit, even though I was aware of it on a subconscious level, there was a really surprising amount of top-tier titles that were scheduled to drop in March. Take a look at this list:

  • Tomb Raider
  • SimCity
  • God of War: Ascension
  • StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm
  • Gears of War: Judgement
  • Bioshock Infinite
  • Army of Two: The Devil’s Cartel

If we activate our Deloreans and take a gander at January and February as well, we can add DmC: Devil May Cry, Dead Space 3, Ni No Kuni, Aliens: Colonial Marines and Metal Gear Rising: Revengence. Granted, not all of those games ended up being as good as one would have hoped *cough* SimCity, Aliens *cough*, but for the first three months of the year, that's a pretty impressive line-up of games to choose from.

Now a few years ago, the chances of coming across an impressive roster like that at this time of the year was a mere flight of fancy. You would never have seen that many high-profile titles get a release before the October/November run-up to Christmas. For years the de facto sales strategy of the video game industry was to rev the fans up at E3 and then to dump everything into the last quarter of the year in hope of filling a Christmas stocking.

And if you think about it now, operating in that way was seriously flawed; you had all these awesome games potentially cannibalising each others sales as they battled for gamers dollars. Perhaps it wasn't as big of a deal in the past, when budgets weren't as stupendous as they are now, and the need to sell millions of copies of a title to turn a profit wasn't a requirement as it is now. In a scenario like that releasing at Christmas time made a certain amount of sense. But now, with games costing what they do, presenting you game to the masses with as little competition as possible makes a lot more sense.

And its a good deal for gamers as well. Gamers are happy to play all year-round, provided we have something to play. And if we get to stagger our gaming choices throughout the calendar year, so much the better.
