Last year I predicted that 2013 will be the year for local eSports - where we will see cyber athletes get paid to play, partnerships with Corporates will form with the focus of advancing competitive gaming, the importance of the MSSA will be recognized and that local gamers will compete on the international playing field on a more regular basis.

Come March16th and SA players will be treated to an event at which all the above mentioned factors join forces in a celebration of one day of eSports and video gaming.

Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) has played a significant role in advancing eSports, both on an individual level for local players and as a Federation on a governmental level. I have therefore asked the president; Mr Colin Webster, to share with us the organisations journey in regards to the March 16 StarCraft 2 event.

An open letter to South African gamers from Mr Colin Webster, president of Mind Sports South Africa

The 16th of March 2013 will witness one of the most historic days in the history of South African eSports. Yes, of course it is the Invitational Championship for StarCraft 2: The Heart of the Swarm to promote the new title, but the date holds far greater significance.

Without doubt, the StarCraft titles have aided the development of eSports as a sport almost more than any other titles. The title forces the gamer to be adept in many different skills such as, problem solving, productivity analysis, time control and improved reflexes. It is a game that pushes a gamer to the limit.

Thus, championships abound world-wide in the game of StarCraft all the way from the lowest levels through to the highest international levels. It is, therefore not surprising that the International eSports Federation (IeSF) hosts the game at its annual World Championships. It is at such world championships that South Africa has carved out a solid reputation and where Robert “PandaTank” has earned his stripes as one of the best StarCraft gamers in the world!

Bearing in mind that the game is played on-line over the internet, the South African governing body, Mind Sports South Africa is fully aware that there is little to replace real face-to-face competition in order to improve standards and to ready the South African gamers for international competition. Thus, the MSSA using all its contacts gained over the years at the IeSF to organise the first test match ever between South Africa and any other country in the game of StarCraft It is also the first time that South Africa will have a test match against Romania!

The Romanian player, Silvui “NightEnd” Lazar, currently also plays for the fabulously popular team Fnatic, and finished in second place at the 2012 IeSF World Championships. Without doubt, Lazar is a tough match for Botha. It is a test match that will have every South African on the edge of their seats as they root for Botha. Botha himself is a much improved player, and this is one test match that brings with it all the drama of international sport – it is going to be fun!
