Unless the game is specifically built around the concept, a sure way to ruin any game is to include an escort mission. Pick any game, any frickin' game, that has one and then tell me it wasn't the worst, most frustrating level in that game. Escort characters are by far the dumbest characters in video games, possessing less intelligence than un-mutated sea moss.
Stupid as they are, you really have to ask yourself what value these people really have, that they require your expert skills to protect them. If they existed in real life no-one would blame you if you left them to die.
