Christian "IWillDominate" Riviera

It all began last year when Christian “IWillDominate” Riviera (despite his pretty hair) was banned from League of Legends as punishment for being a Professor of Toolology and making many people upset in game with his insults and by just generally being a terrible person. Now Riot Games, the company behind LoL, has announced the permaban of two more pro players; namely Ilias “enVision” Hartsema of Mousesports and Damien “Linak” Lorthios of Against All Authority. These two meanies will not be allowed to participate in this weekend’s League Series Championship Season 3 Qualifier or any other professional tournaments for the remainder of the 2013 season.

Why the drastic action this time? Let’s look at some stats. According to TheEscapist:

Hartsema was reported in 29% of his total matches, which is six times as much as the average European LoL player. Lorthios, while not quite as deplorable, was still reprimanded for 20% of his matches.

One of Hartsema's accounts managed to rack up 436 conduct reports in just 135 matches, and his current harassment score puts him in the top 0.06% of all EU players.

Sis. And these are guys that get paid actual moneys to play this game.

And what do I think about all of this? I’ll tell you even if you don’t actually want to know, just because I can. In a way, I get it. LoL is a game where you have to rely on your team to the maximum levels and if one of them decides to potato, your entire game will be ruined in a matter of minutes. Then add to this the extreme pressure of doing that on an international level in an extremely competitive environment and also the massive damage your inflated ego will sustain with a loss…a human being can only take so much.

BUT…

At the same time, you are playing on an international level; you are a professional who does this for your job, you get economic remuneration for playing…so don’t be a douche. The world is watching and therefore it’s your responsibility to maintain a standard of behaviour that doesn’t make you seem enormously embarrassing. Things like ragequits are actually unacceptable: imagine a rugby game (I actually despise rugby, but meh) where the losing team was like “We’re losing, we’re mad.jpg” and then left the field. No. That’s silly.

Play nice kids, because Riot Games aren’t LOLJK anymore.
