NVIDIA have announced at the CES 2013 Show that they would be creating a portable gaming console dubbed "Project Shield".

From a gaming perspective, the new console will support both Android and PC titles, with gamers getting access  to Android titles via Google Play or streamed via a PC from Steam. Sounds interesting, certainly, having access to both Andriod and PC games via a single console, although I am a bit nervous about that streaming part.

"Project SHIELD can instantly download Android games, including Android-optimized titles available on NVIDIA's TegraZone™ game store, which has already delivered more than 6 million downloads to gamers. It can also be used as a wireless game receiver to a nearby PC equipped with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 GPU or higher."

The console further promises to utilise some pretty powerful technology under the hood, with the core of Project Shield being built around the new NVIDIA Tegra 4, which purports to be "the world's fastest mobile processor" according to the press release.

"...the new NVIDIA Tegra 4, which delivers enormous power from its custom 72-core GeForce GPU and the first quad-core application of ARM's most advanced CPU core, the Cortex-A15. These, combined with its battery-saver core and energy-saving PRISM 2 technology, deliver hours of gameplay on a single charge."

The controller is promised to be "console-grade" with game display coming from an integrated 5-inch 1280x720 HD retinal multi-touch display with 294 dpi. According to the release, the sound is also not ignored with the console promising to provide "fidelity and dynamic range never before available on a portable device, through its custom, bass reflex, tuned port audio system -- with twice the low-frequency output of high-end laptops."

With Valve's Steam Console, The Ouya and The eSfere potentially hitting our shores, seems like there is going to be a LOT of competition in the console space. Good thing, I think.
