I confess, I have never completed Super Mario Bros. and I probably never will. The reason I never completed that game was because I just got tired of successfully infiltrating castles only to be told the Princess was somewhere else. That got old.
So it wouldn't surprise me if Mario himself just totally snapped and thought "?!%& it" and went medieval on everyones' asses. As demonstrated below.
