At the recent MineCon 2012 convention, Mojang, developers of the uber-successful Minecraft showed off the studios upcoming game.

The game is called Scrolls and will be different from Minecraft, from both an aesthetic and a design perspective. Where Minecraft is a very open, free-form game, where players effectively build their own world, Scrolls is a much more defined game. It is a strategy role-playing video game that combines elements from trading card games and board games. Think card-based Pokemon or Magic the Gathering mixed with Risk.

At the MineCon 2012, the devs went into great detail informing attendees about the games basic premise, via a reasonably in-depth gameplay session which you can see below. More importantly however, Mojang revealed that the game would likely follow a similar release path as Minecraft. When ready, the devs will release an in-development version of the game and then gradually update until full release. The game is currently in a closed alpha.
