Yesterday Yanick Roy, Studio Director for BioWare Montreal, revealed some exciting information about Mass Effect 4. The game is already in development, with a crew that is dedicated to make the next installment of the franchise as unforgettable as the Shepard saga. God help them if they don’t deliver.

The passion

In his blog post, Roy made the team’s commitment to the game clear by stating that, “We all care very much about Mass Effect and make our decisions based on what’s best for the game.” To ensure that they also include decisions from the massive, emotionally charged fans, Casey Hudson, Executive Producer, last week released a tweet saying that, “We’re in early stages of designing a completely new Mass Effect game. What would you want to see in it?”

The engine

Roy also revealed that Mass Effect 4 will be built on the Frostbite2 engine, the same engine that was used in Medal of Honor: Warfighter. “There is really not much I can tell you about the game right now, except that it will be built with the amazing technology of Frostbite as its foundation, enhanced by many of the systems that the Dragon Age III team has already spent a lot of time building.”

The story

So now we know that the graphics and physics will be amazing, what about the story? Will they be able to continue delivering a story that can match the scale of Shepard’s legacy? According to Roy, they intend to do just that. “The other thing I can tell you is that, while it will be very respectful of the heritage built over the course of the first three games, with the original trilogy now concluded and the switch over to a new engine, we are exploring new directions, both on the gameplay and story fronts. You can still expect the pillars the franchise is known for to be fully intact though, including diverse alien races, a huge galaxy to explore, and of course rich, cinematic storytelling.”

Closing words

I for one am excited and thrilled that I will be able to explore the Mass Effect universe again. I just hope this team will be able to meet the (probably too) high expectations of its fanatic fans. It sounds like Roy and his team have taken up the challenge. “We know you have high expectations for the franchise and we want to make sure whatever we show you lives up to those expectations.”
