Now this is something that you don’t find every day, and as every MMO has dreamed about at night since being released, there is a game which is more popular than World of Warcraft, but it’s not another MMO – its League of Legends – the free-2-play RTS / RPG hybrid DotA clone.

This statement and report is based on information collected by Xfire and DFC Intelligence over the last year from European and North American players who run the Xfire gaming client. This information was collected from more than 21 million Xfire users over the period of July 2011 to June 2012. Note that the report specifically excludes the Asian regions.

League of Legends weighs in just shy of a staggering 1.3 billion hours of gameplay logged during that timeframe with a distant second of slightly more than 600 million hours for World of Warcraft.

“The fact that online games such League of Legends eclipsed more than a billion hours of online game time in a year is simply incredible, and a testament to the fundamental shift currently sweeping through the games industry. By comparison, Bungie recently announced that the Halo franchise surpassed 2 billion hours of online play, but that’s over a period of seven years.” said David Cole, CEO, DFC Intelligence.

The top 10 games played by playhours consumed:

1. League of Legends: 1,292,502,456
2. World of Warcraft: 622,378,909
3. Minecraft: 371,635,651
4. Heroes of Newerth: 184,520,156
5. Diablo III: 172,907,605
6. Battlefield 3: 171,852,550
7. MapleStory: 165,503,651
8. StarCraft II: 163,980,293
9. World Of Tanks: 145,702,931
10. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3: 126,754,082

An interesting note of one of the games on the list is Diablo3 – it was released during May and so wasn’t being tracked till then, and considering its place on the list after only 45 days of tracking indicates its incredible popularity, and if it continues its trend, it may well usurp World of Warcraft as well in the coming months.

Just for a perspective on 1.2 billion hours – that’s way over 136 thousand years…
