Nvidia GRID: Leaner, Meaner, Greener - Cloud Gaming

nVidia has recently announced their entry into the cloud computing arena with the nVidia GeForce Grid series of GPU's. These are being offered initially to services like Gaikai and OTOY. The goal is to provide console-like gaming ability onto just about any device anywhere, be it your mobile phone, tablet pc or other console.

The technology behind the GeForce GRID series includes new GPU fabrication methodologies at 28nm, integrated hardware encoding, frame capture and compression on GPU directly, and support for GPU virtualization. While supposedly having a nVidia-series client for the decoding process would improve performance, as long as your device has a reasonable h.264 decoder, you should be fine.

With the changes to the overall capture and transmission of audiovisual data, as well as the new fabrication process applied to the GPU's plus virtusaalization, total processing power has effectively quadrupled, along with a power consumption reduction of as much as 50%.

Time will tell whether this new technology will find more widespread use, with bringing virtual console gaming to every platform, especially here in South Africa with general lack of the necessary speed to effectively handle the relatively large throughput required for these services.
