Sledgehammer Games are the first studio in the history of the franchise to be offered a 3 year development cycle to complete their Call of Duty title, Advanced Warfare. With this added time we have seen them on a path of creating a title that will change the way Call of Duty is played. After a recently released trailer from Slegehammer Games, we see exactly why that is becoming more of a reality.

Future Technology

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare will be bringing with it a new era of technology that has been based around the 2054 future. According to Glen Schofield, the gm and co-founder of Sledgehammer Gamers, all of the tech that has made it into Advanced Warfare has been derived from technology that we see today. Glenn stated that when players play the game that the technology has "got to be relatable and believable".

Highlighted in the video we see three pieces of tech that we will be seeing in the campaign for Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare.

1 - Threat Detection Grenade

The threat detection grenade forms apart of the smart grenades that we saw introduced at the E3 conference earlier this month. With a threat detection grenade, you can get a detailed map of your enemy locations. Similar to  a sensor grenade in Black Ops 2, the sensor grenade will reveal enemies behind walls for a short period of time, thus allowing you to get the tactical advantage on the battlefield.

2 - Mobile Barricade

Think of a hovering riot shield that once you sync to it, will allow you to move freely but with the added protection of having a bullet proof wall in front of you. The mobile barricade will respond to your movements, meaning that it will follow the front facing area of your character. If you wish to shoot at your enemies, the mobile barricade will drop when you aim down sights. The mobile barricade will allow you to survive areas of high traffic from enemy fire but is still vulnerable to explosive damage that penetrates behind the shield.

3 - Hover-bikes and Hover-tanks

In Advanced Warfare, we will be seeing vehicles that are consistent in almost all environments. This is thanks to the hover bikes and tanks being able to move freely on water and land.

Exoskelleton

The exoskelleton for Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare was pinned by Glen Schofield as, "the thing that is ushering in a new era for Call of Duty."  The exoskelleton will have a wide array of features that has been dubbed as the 'exo abilities'.

Exo Abilities:

  • Over drive - Allows players to speed themselves up but in doing so it slows down time around them. This means that players will go into a 'slow-mo' mode when using overdrive.
  • Exoboost - The exo boost is like adding springs to your character, meaning that now when you hit the A-button or space bar to jump, you will go much higher than before.
  • Cloaking - This will temporarily allow your character to go invisible, thus allowing you to avoid detection from near by enemies.
  • Strength - The strength ability will allow you to pull off cover from near by areas, as well as fling opponents across vast areas. It will also allow you to open doors that you wouldn't be able to do without the addition.

Closing Thoughts

Sledgehammer Games is trying to stress the point that they are different from other Call of Duty titles, which to a degree I agree with. They are definitely mixing thing up with their movement mechanics with the introduction of the exo-skelleton. That being said, I do see areas of concern, especially when unique ideas (not even great ones) such as the sensor grenade in Black Ops 2 are being copied and given a different name in Advanced Warfare. It gets me to wondering whether or not we are being taken for a ride again, or are actually about to see a significantly different Call of Duty title.

Do you think Sledgehammer will deliver or do you think they are set to repeat the mistakes of their predecessors?  Let us know by commenting below or hitting us up on Twitter or Facebook.
