Crackle is a fantastic service from Sony Pictures Entertainment that was launched in 2007. It allows you to stream full length TV series and movies from a back catalog of Sony’s finest. The service is available from the App Store and in browser, but more recently, Xbox LIVE. Although I’ve only tried the service on my UK account, I doubt it’s available on the South African Marketplace but I have yet to confirm that.
It’s a dream and has a surprisingly pleasant range of TV shows for free including The New Adventures of Spider-Man, Samurai X (The English version of Rurouni Kenshin), Dilbert and S.W.A.T.
Movies like Dick, Cruel Intentions and the old school Gunn are also completely free to stream. Technically, the service is not available to South Africans due to region and IP constraints, but somehow seems to get over that hurdle on Xbox LIVE.
The story gets better for those South Africans who use MWEB as their Internet service provider. Because MWEB prioritizes traffic through gaming services like Xbox LIVE, Battlenet and Steam, the video traffic flies through Xbox as it’s getting streamed. It works the same for Youtube videos through the console except that Youtube doesn’t have the entire catalog of Astro Boy. Damn straight. This has all been accidental, but a happy accident at that for local gamers using Xbox LIVE and MWEB.
Have you tried Crackle out yet? What has been your experience? And let us know if you’ve been able to access it through the South African Marketplace.
