The Dark Souls series is notoriously difficult - and the upcoming Dark Souls II will be even more agonizing. Other players can now invade your world when you are in the undead (hollow) state, where previously they could only terrorise you while you were still in the land of the living. To balance out the difficult Dark Souls learning curve, Namco Bandai, made a few changes to the Covenant System which returns in Dark Souls II.
You have been invaded
Speaking to the Official PlayStation Magazine, Yui Tanimura, Dark Souls 2 co-director, said "Our main intent is not to foster a greater frequency of multiplayer, but more to give players the opportunity to interact even within the ‘loose’ parameters allowed,”
Thank you kind sirs, we can now be violated even when undead. No more escaping unwanted player-vs-player confrontations. All is not lost though, body snatching will be policed.
According to producer Takeshi Miyazoe, "Also, there will be penalties for players who invade, but still lose. There are risks. And there will be ‘policemen’ against invaders and a ransom system where if you constantly invade or kill NPCs there will be motivation for summoned players to go after you.”
And here it is, if you belong to the Bortherhood of Blood, you will have an added talent for invading the undead...
Overhauled Covenant System
Tweaks to the Covenant System bring unique abilities directly related to the hollow invasion to the gameplay. These are intended to provide protection or it can promote those who feel the draw to become serial invaders. PlayStation Magazine explains:
- Way Of Blue members who are invaded will automatically summon members of the Blue Sentinels
- Heirs To The Sun will act as benevolent heroes who get summoned by priority to players in PvP and PvE situations
- The Brotherhood Of Blood, meanwhile, get to role-play as the bad guys, with an increased capability for invasion
- The Bell Keeper apostles will automatically invade players who enter a certain area of the game
- The there will be the the policeman class that Miyazoe mentioned earlier, who will reap bounties on the heads of “wanted” serial invaders
Community designed shields appear in Dark Souls II
6 original shields designed by the Dark Souls community have been selected by FROMSOFTWARE to appear in Dark Souls II.
As a conclusion to the Shield Design Contest held in May 2013 on Facebook, renowned developer FROMSOFTWARE selected 6 original designs of shield created by the Dark Souls community in order to integrate them in the game. This extra content has been adapted from the original designs to blend in the Dark Souls II aesthetic and become part of Drangleic, the mysterious fallen kingdom where the s story unfolds.
NAMCO BANDAI Games and FROMSOFTWARE would like to thank the talented creators of the selected designs: Denis "DasHurz" Bachmaier, Charles Collier, Illim, Gabriel Verdon and Alexandre Etiennes Jonathan Du Cass. They will be credited in the game and will receive a copy of Dark Souls II Collector's Edition for their amazing contribution. As an extra reward, NAMCO BANDAI Games is proud to announce each of them will receive a real shield based on their design, created by the blacksmiths of Armdia, a company specialized in the creation of medieval weapons and accessories. In addition to the shields revealed today, two other sets of shields will unveil on January 28th and January 31st.
