So you’ve seen the awesome LEGO video game iterations. Not the LEGO game series, the amazing videos of Gears of War 3, Call of Duty and StarCraft all rendered in LEGO. One individual by the name of Michael Curry (aka Skimbal) has jacked it up a notch and printed a bunch of Sim City 2000 buildings with a 3D printer. The architect from Kansas is working on this continuous project to mold all the buildings from Sim City 2000 and turning them into a tabletop play set. He says he’s doing it in his spare time to clear his mind and to bring his favourite computer game of all time to life.
The process starts in Google Sketch-Up where he models the buildings he remembers from the game in 3D. From there they are printed in 3D using protoyping technology and brought into the real world.
All the Sketch-Up files are available on the
site if you happen to own this high-end and expensive equipment you can make your own Sim City 2000 tabletop game!
3D printing, or prototyping, is a process whereby a high-end printer using ink jet technology knits silica based powder and binder together to create a fully realized 3D object. This is useful for prototyping any hardware or large scale equipment that would otherwise be too expensive to manufacture during concept. It’s an extremely accurate process and well used in the corporate manufacturing industry.
Beats LEGO doesn’t it? Now to see some epic Gears of War characters printed in ridiculous detail. Now.
