A little before 11pm last night, we received notification from MindSports South Africa (MSSA) that Romania has issued a formal challenge to South Africa for an official online test match for Dota 2.

Before you start scoffing and going "Who the heck is Romania?", first know the facts:

  1. Romania has taken home medals in 2 out of 3 years at the annual Internation eSports Federation (IeSF) World Championships.
  2. Romania is ranked 3rd out of 33 countries in the IeSF rankings, just behind Korea in 1st place and Austria in 2nd place. By the way, the IeSF also counts other "powerhouse" eSports countries in its membership like United States and China. A full member listing can be found here: http://ie-sf.org/eng/company/nations.asp
  3. South Africa is ranked 16th in those same standings, so we are very much the underdogs.

The test match still has to be accepted by the MSSA, but we can bet this is going to one tough test match for the South African team. As soon as hear more, we'll be reporting it here!

The full press release from Colin Webster, the President of the MSSA:

In late afternoon on Monday, 21 January 2013, the MSSA received a missive from the Romanian eSports Federation President, Silviu Stroie, in which South Africa was officially challenged to an online test match in the eSports game of Dota 2.

While most South Africans are not aware of the Romanian  eSports scene, South Africans would do well to be wary of the strength of Romania in eSports. In two out of three years, Romania has been in the medals at the annual IeSF World Championships.

While South Africa is ranked by the IeSF to be the 16th best eSports country in the world (along with the Philippines and Singapore), Romania, under the astute guidance of Mr Silviu Stroie, has powered itself to be ranked an impressive third. First is South Korea, and second is Austria......

This test match, which still has to be formally accepted by the MSSA is thus going to be a test of skills in which South Africa has much to gain, and Romania has much to lose...

There is no doubt that this test match will be of great benefit to all South African gamers, and will hopefully cement South Africa as a real contender in the world of eSports.
