The Wii U has been out for nearly weeks now and in that period has sold over 1.8 million units, a record breaking amout for a HD capable video game console. Measured against the Xbox 360 and PS3 for sales in the four week launch window, the Wii U is a clear winner. The Xbox 360 knocked back 940,000 units during its four week launch during November of 2005,while the Playstation 3 lagged behind, selling a disappointing 540,000 units over the same period when it launched in 2006. The Wii U's numbers are clearly ahead, but come off as even more impressive when you realise that its numbers are also higher than the Xbox 360's and the PS3's combined.
Yet despite those impressive figures, the Nintendo's new fun box still trails the original Wii, which sold 2 millions units in its four week launch window.
As impressive as the numbers are, I'll ask the Ninty fanboys to restrain their joygasms just a little longer. The current high demand for the Wii U was majorly bolstered due the Christmas season and the real test will come in the new year once the holiday hangover sets in. If the Wii U sales numbers don't take a significant dip, then we may be on to something.
Another cause for caution is the slow sales of Wii U games. Though the Wii U launched with 29 in the US, only two of those game feature in that countries Top 100 according to VGChartz
. Nintendo Land and New Super Mario Bros. U, charted at 18 and 27, respectively.
